It also brought in some merchandise that was less exclusive and slightly lower in price points. May put Lord & Taylor on a path to profitability that included major expansions and increased promotions. When May Department Stores Company acquired the business back in 1986, May officials found an iconic brand that was hampered by severely antiquated technological systems. Lord & Taylor’s image and definition has been blurred for several decades. The move may have saved funds but it made the retailer’s competitive longterm future precarious, if not impossible. By the end of March, Le Tote unceremoniously eliminated its buying and administrative staff in order to save funds. Le Tote’s inability to remotely weather COVID-19’s impact may have proved the skeptics right. Its exterior windows are covered in plywood as a protection to any possible demonstrations. The Washington-Chevy Chase Lord & Taylor's grounds are no longer meticulously landscaped as it holds. Le Tote operated Lord & Taylor for only a few months until COVID-19 hit. After it secured a purchase agreement with Lord & Taylor’s owner, the powerful Canadian firm, Hudson’s Bay Company, it scrambled to pay the $77 million bill. Last fall’s purchase of Lord & Taylor by Le Tote was met with skepticism. It’s almost an omen of what the building might become should it remain unoccupied for a period of time. ![]() Like many of its nearby retailers, its windows are currently covered with plywood. Its covered parking lot is tagged with graffiti. Located within one of Washington’s more upscale retail districts, the store’s once-meticulously manicured grounds are now unkempt and overgrown. Back in 1959, Mamie Eisenhower helped open that location with champagne, amidst live peacocks. That location has been one of the retailer’s best performing stores.
